Nope; movie review 2022

NOPE
Cert 15
130 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong language, threat, bloody images

"I loved Get Out and Us but genuinely would have rather been asleep in bed."
Our lass had taken in a late-night showing of Nope because she had been so excited by Jordan Peele's previous two movies.
In her words, she was "very disappointed."
I took this with a pinch of salt because we don't always view cinema the same way but I am sad to report that both Mrs W and I felt similarly deflated.
Peele teams up again with his Get Out hero Daniel Kaluuya who plays OJ - the low-key son of a veteran respected trainer (Keith David) of horses for Hollywood.
His dad is out on the ranch when he is killed by a coin which inexplicably falls from the sky.
OJ attempts to continue the business but doesn't have the aptitude of either his father or his showy sister (Keke Palmer).
Meanwhile, a cloud has hung over the ranch for months without being blown away on the wind and it begins to emerge that it may have a connection with the disappearance of local citizens.
After watching his previous two films, I didn't expect a Peele movie to be straightforward but, in my opinion, Nope is too difficult to follow.
For example, there is a sequence in which a chimpanzee goes on a killing spree before a live TV audience with no obvious link to the rest of the picture.
Maybe Peele is having an indirect dig at the media (it is represented a couple of times later on) but it is not obvious.
But the most underwhelming element of Nope is that he doesn't elicit the same wonderful connection with the lead character as he did in Get Out.
Kaluuya was so enthralling that he was nominated for an Oscar but here he is understated, monotone and not nearly as engaging.
My new son-in-law described Nope as 'rammle' which in his part of the world means rubbish.
I think that was slightly too harsh but it is far too arty to be compelling and was, therefore, dull and something of a letdown.

Reasons to watch: the Get Out team is back
Reasons to avoid: Just a bit boring

Laughs: A couple of chuckles
Jumps: None
Vomit: Yes
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 5/10

Did you know?
Jupiter's Claim - the theme park featured in Nope is now a visitor attraction at Universal Studios in Hollywood.

The final word. Jordan Peele: "There was something about the notion of starting with Close Encounters but realising we’re in Jaws that had an allure to it. The great tradition of flying-saucer movies is one that I admire and I haven’t seen enough attempts at it." New York Times
